As a parent, finding ways to keep your 3-year-old entertained and engaged while their younger sibling takes a nap can be quite a challenge. Sensory activities are a fantastic way to stimulate your child's mind, develop their senses, and keep them happily occupied during these quiet moments. In this blog post, we'll explore a variety of sensory activities that are not only fun but also educational and developmentally beneficial for your little one. Let's dive in!

  • Play-dough Fun

Playdough is a versatile and engaging sensory activity that can captivate your child's attention for hours. Encourage them to squish, mold, and shape the dough into various objects, and animals, or simply let their imagination run wild. You can even add natural scents like vanilla or lavender to make it a multi-sensory experience. We love to make our own play-dough as a great bonding experience and it's made with taste-safe ingredients: recipe at the bottom of this page.

  • Sensory Bins

Create sensory bins filled with different materials like rice, dried beans, or sand. Hide small toys or objects within the materials and let your child dig, scoop, and explore. This activity helps enhance their tactile senses and improves fine motor skills. These bins stack nicely, and this little helpers set is a great add-in for your bins. If you don't feel like making your own this brand has a few options of premade bins to buy.

  • Nature Exploration

Take your child outside for a sensory adventure in nature. Explore the textures of leaves, rocks, and tree bark. Listen to the sounds of birds chirping or the wind rustling through the trees. Encourage them to describe what they see, hear, and feel. Take the baby monitor with you and let your toddler get some much-needed outside time.

  • Messy Art

Set up a messy art station with washable paints, paper, and various tools like sponges, brushes, or even their fingers. Let them create colorful masterpieces, fostering creativity and sensory exploration through different textures and temperatures. We like to make our own taste-safe paint using yogurt and some food coloring!

  • Water Play

Fill a shallow container with water and let your child splash, pour, and experiment with different water toys. You can also add a few drops of food coloring to make the water more visually stimulating. Water play is not only fun but also helps improve hand-eye coordination.

We like this sensory table for indoor or outdoor fun. Just make sure with water play to put a towel down so they don't slip.

  • Sensory Bottles

Create sensory bottles by filling empty clear plastic bottles with a variety of materials such as glitter, beads, or rice. Seal the bottles tightly and let your child shake and observe the contents. This activity promotes visual stimulation and encourages calmness. You can also create sensory sticks out of paper towel tubes. We got this idea from Blippi.

  • Homemade Playdough

Make homemade playdough with your child. This sensory activity is not only enjoyable but also an excellent opportunity to involve your little one in the creative process. They can help mix ingredients, choose colors, and enjoy the delightful scent of fresh playdough. We love the recipe from Mothercould:

Have Fun

Engaging sensory activities are a wonderful way to keep your 3-year-old entertained and stimulated while their sibling takes a nap. These activities foster creativity, improve sensory perception, and provide valuable learning experiences. So, the next time you find yourself with a few quiet moments, try one of these sensory activities and watch your child's imagination and development flourish. Happy playing!
